Social Media Setup Checklist

Initial Setup

  • Formalize Social Media Plan.
  • Create Marketing calendar
  • Setup HootSuite account & integrate Twitter, & blog (RSS).
  • Research keywords with Google Search Insights & Google Keyword Tool.

  • Register domain name. (I recommend

  • Install WordPress or RSS plugin to integrate blog.
  • Install SlideShare to post videos or Powerpoint presentations.
  • Find groups with target market & contact sphere.


Facebook Business Page

  • Create a page at .
  • Add business information, completely. Add web site links to main web site, as well as any other social media profiles (Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.)
  • Customize logo grpahic.
  • Customize Welcome tab.
  • Invite Facebook friends to "like" Page.
  • Create a shortcut link for your page at




  • Create a Twitter profile. For the username, either use your name or your business name. Make it easy for people to find you.
  • Add business information.
  • Customize background.
  • Find & add followers
  • Use (Advanced Search) to find target market. Follow them, start conversations, reply to their tweets, etc.
  • Add search to an RSS reader like Google Reader.



  • Setup accounts with YouTube, Vimeo, Viddler, DailyMotion, TubeMogul
  • Customize channels on YouTube, Vimeo, Viddler, DailyMotion, TubeMogul

  • Add business information.
  • Find connections



Google Places

  • Setup or claim business profile.
  • Fully complete business information.
  • Use strategic keywords in the business categories.
  • Add 10 photos & 5 videos. Post your logo as the first photo.



Yahoo Local & Bing Local

  • Setup or claim business profile.
  • Add business information.

Foursquare (if brick & mortar business)

  • Setup or claim business profile.
  • Add business information.
  • Advertise check-in special. (Do not advertise a Mayor special. Some people abuse this feature.)
  • If you're not a Brick & Mortar business, use Foursquare to check-in at recommended local businesses, especially if the business gives you referrals. Always post tips & useful information.
